The PBS documentary, The Men Who Sailed The Liberty Ships, tells the remarkable story of the civilian seaman who volunteered to sail cargo ships to the front lines during World War II.  Filmed aboard the Jeremiah O'Brien, the last unaltered Liberty Ship still afloat, "The Men Who Sailed The Liberty Ships", relates the untold story of "the forgotten men" of World War II with numerous interviews of former Liberty Ship crewmen.  Soon after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii on December 7, 1941, which triggered United States involvement in World War II, a quarter of a million American civilians volunteered for the hazardous duty of sailing cargo ships to the global battle zones.  These citizen sailors came from all walks of life and many had never seen an ocean let alone sailed in a large ship.  Yet after several weeks of training, these volunteers joined seasoned sailors to fill out the crews of tankers and freighters bringing food, fuel and material to America's Allies on the fighting front.  While minimally armed, the Liberty ships were frequent targets of German and Japanese submarines and the sailors who sailed them numbered among the highest casualty rates of the war.  Thousands lost their lives in the North Atlantic Ocean while delivering supplies to the U.S.S.R. via the port city of Murmansk.  Many others lost their lives on the equally dangerous convoys in the Pacific Ocean.  Despite their important contribution to winning World War II, many upon returning home received a chilling reception.  National newspaper columnists painted them all as radicals and worse yet potential communists.  Adding insult to injury, the United States Congress denied their Seaman's Bill of Rights and refused to pay benefits and pensions.  This video tells the story of these forgotten sailors of World War II and is well worth watching.  The narrator of this documentary is not identified.  Full screen in black & white and color.  Released in 1994.  Runtime 57 minutes.
