The German's called it Der Gabelschwanz Teuful or fork tailed devil and the Japanese referred to it as two planes with one pilot. Without question, Lockheed's P-38 Lightning was a giant step forward in fighter technology and design. It was faster, bigger and more heavily armed then its contemporaries. This book is part one of Detail & Scale's two-part coverage of the famous P-38. It covers all versions from the XP-38 prototype through the P-38 H including the reconnaissance versions F-4, F-5 and F-5A. The P-38 Lightning book is illustrated with many detailed photographs and captions that point out important differences between different variants. Many of these pictures were taken for this publication and represent interesting angles and positions of aircraft such as "Glacier Girl" the P-38 F which was recovered from under the ice pack in Greenland. For the scale modeller, complete reviews are detailed for every P-38 variant covered in this book. These include most plastic model kits from 1/144 th scale through 1/32nd scale. Included in this book are many color and period black and white photographs, color profiles, detailed line drawings and technical specifications for the variants covered. This book is 80 pages and is in excellent condition. The author is Bert Kinzey. Edition published in 1998.
