The movie, The Purple Heart, centers on a United States Army Air Corps bomber crew that is shot down over China during World War II and is subsequently put on trial for killing innocent civilians. The movie opens with the Japanese capturing the downed flyers in China and moving them to Japan to face trial for murder. The ultimate goal in the trial and subsequent torture of the flyers is to figure out where they came from. In this brutal trial, the aviators know what the final verdict will be and refuse to disclose their high command structure and most importantly where they came from. When the threat of death does not move the airmen to answer the Japanese captor's questions, they are one by one taken out of their common jail cell and tortured which leaves them physically and mentally shattered but still unbroken. This movie includes heart-wrenching, powerful performances and represents a moving tribute to Americans experiencing World War II on the homefront at a time when the world was engulfed in flames. Starring Dana Andrews, Richard Conte and Farley Granger among others. Full screen in black and white. Released in 1944. Runtime 98 minutes.
