The movie, The Red Tent, tells the fascinating and true story of the ill-fated 1928 airship expedition to the North Pole lead by Italian explorer Umberto Nobile.  In this action packed adventure story the explores aboard the Italian dirigible Italia reach the North Pole only to crash in the treacherous Artic in the middle of a storm.  While most of the expedition team members initially survive, they are not sure whether or not potential rescuers know their location.  While waiting for a possible rescue, they create a makeshift shelter by placing a large piece of red canvas over what's left of their dirigible gondola.  The long Arctic days creep by and still no one responds to their desperate calls of S.O.S. using a portable radio.  Eventually the battery runs out on the radio and the adventurers are left wondering if anyone heard their signal.  The only question that remains is whether they will be rescued before their food runs out and the ice breaks-up with the spring season weather warm-up.  This movie includes a number of minutes of vintage black and white film, which helps to give context to the film that follows.  This movie will certainly appeal to anyone interested in action adventures and early airship travel.  Starring Sean Connery, Claudia Cardinale and Hardy Kruger among others.  Full screen in black & white and color.  Released in 1969.  Runtime 121 minutes.
