The story of "The Slybird Group" tells the story of the development of fighter aviation in England and the 8th Air Froce during World War II.  This story is told through the perspective of the 353rd Fighter Group which became operational flying Republic P-47 Thunderbolts in 1943.  In the beginning, this fighter group was used to escort American bombers on their missions over Western Europe.  With the deployment of the North American P-51 Mustang, the P-47 Thunderbolt was "redeployed" on ground attack operations.  Once the 353rd Fighter Group was equipped with the P-51 Mustangs themselves, their missions included both bomber escort and ground attack operations.  Of particular note is the fact that no fewer than 51 of the 353rd Fighter Group's pilots became aces during the 1943 to 1945 time period.  The 353rd played a key role along with the other United States 8th Air Force fighter groups.  As an air force, they cleared the skies for Flying Fortresses and Liberators to destroy the German War Industry, they supported Allied infantry and armored forces with deadly attacks on German ground targets and they provided invaluable support services to United States airborne operations at Arnhem and the Rhine.  When the dust had settled at the conclusion of hostilities in 1945, they had destroy about 800 German aircraft, over 2,000 locomotives and rail cars, about 1,100 motor vehicles and almost 100 gun positions.  The major sections of this book include the following: 1) Introduction And Acknowledgements; 2) The 353rd Fighter Group on Escort and Ground Attack Operations; 3) 353rd Fighter Group Markings; 4) Scale Drawings; 5) 353rd Fighter Group Aircraft Photos; 6) Air and Ground Aces of the 353rd Fighter Group; 7) 353rd Group Mission List and 8) Index.  In addition to an informative narrative, this book includes the following: 1) Approximately 66 black and white vintage photographs and 2) 12 black and white illustrations.  This book is 95 pages and is in very good condition.  The authors are Kenn C. Rust and William N. Hess with Paul R. Matland and John Preston (drawings).  Edition published in 1968.
