The book, The Victory Era In Color! - Rare Color Photographs Of The World War II Years represents the largest collection, in one book, of vintage color photographs from World War II.  Famed author and war bird aviator Jeffry L. Ethell assembled this remarkable collection of World War II color photographs from many sources including individual service men, military photographers and from the National Archives.  In assembling this large collection of color photographs, the author has once and for all put to bed the notion that World War II was only photographed with black and white film.  While Kodak Kodachrome color film was available for sale in the late 1930s it only came in a 35 mm format and was largely targeted to the amateur photographer.  Meanwhile the professional photographers of the era preferred sheet film of 4" by 5" or larger and for the most part ignored the new Kodachrome color film.  This explains why, in large part, there was seemingly a scarcity of color photographs initially coming out of World War II.  As the author dug, however, it became clear that many servicemen took color photographs during the war but usually in small numbers.  Eventually, the author discovered a number of amateur soldier photographers that had taken sizable quantities of color photographs during the war.  Added to this, was the discovery of previously lost color photographs miss-filed in the National archives.  The major sections of "The Victory Era In Color!" are as follows: 1) Introduction - (Some think color film didn't exist in the early '40s, but it was available straight across the drugstore counter.); 2) Chapter One - On The Home Front (Stateside, the war years were far from grim, as these colorful street scenes attest.); 3) Chapter Two - In Training (After Pearl Harbor, nearly 18 million Americans took crash courses in soldiering.); 4) Chapter Three - From North Africa To Italy (Americans hit the ground running on the windswept sands of the Mediterranean.); 5) Chapter Four - Memories From Europe (From England through their colorful French countryside, Allied boys saw sights they'd never seen...and felt the gratitude of those they liberated.); 6) Chapter Five - The Big Names (Entertainers and world leaders were colorful, memorable figures.); 7) Chapter Six - The Navy On Land And Sea (Carriers replaced "battlewagons" as the primary floating force.); 8) Chapter Seven - Some Unsung Heroes (Women and blacks fought the enemy and prevailed over discrimination.); 9) Chapter Eight - Life In The Pacific Theater (Tropical greens and ocean blues surrounded island-hopping Allies in the fight against Japan.); 10) Chapter Nine - Serving In China, Burma, India (Photos of exotic places like Calcutta, Mandalay and Kunming were added to scrapbooks of scrappy American fliers.) and 11) Chapter Ten - We're Coming Home! (V-E and V-J Days set off photo-worthy celebrations the world over.).  In addition to an informative narrative, "The Victory Era In Color!" includes approximately 330 wartime color photographs many never previously published.  "The Victory Era In Color! " is sure to appeal to any military enthusiast or World War II history maven.  This book is 162 pages and is in excellent condition.  The author is Jeffrey L. Ethell.  Edition published in 1994.
