The book, Thundering Peacemaker: The B-36 Story In Words And Pictures represents a authoritative and concise pictorial review of America's first true intercontinental strategic bomber.  The B-36 Peacemaker was manufactured by the Convair Aircraft Company and was the largest bomber built up to that time.  The B-36 represented a bridge between the piston engine bombers of World War II and the pure jet B-47, B-52 and B-58 strategic bombers that became available during the latter part of the 1950s.  While the B-36 Peacemaker was relatively slow when compared to the jet fighters of the era, it could fly at altitudes that, until the last few years of its service life, were higher than most pursuing enemy fighter aircraft could fly.  It also was out of range of anti-aircraft fire including most surface-to-air missile systems of the era.  The B-36 was also capable of remaining airborne for two days without refueling, which was a remarkable feat when compared to other bombers available in the 1950s.  Also of note, despite its seemingly obsolete appearance, the B-36 pushed 1950s state-of-the-art technologies further than any other aircraft of its era.  Technological obstacles that had to be overcome included structural challenges, engine cooling problems at high altitudes, as well as, the maintenance of sophisticated gun and bombing systems.  The major sections of "Thundering Peacemaker: The B-36 Story In Words And Picture" are as follows: 1) Evolution Of A Giant; 2) Cold War Capers; 3) Excerpts From The Handbook; 4) Parasites And Passengers and 5) Peacemakers In Preservation.  The Excerpts From The Handbook includes the following illustrations: 1) Main Differences Table; 2) Jet Engine Danger Areas; 3) Forward Cabin Arrangement; 4) Camera Compartment Arrangement; 5) Aft Cabin Arrangement; 6) Pilot's Instrument Panel; 7) Pilot's Pedestal and 8) Reciprocating Engine Air Plug Indicators.  In addition to an informative narrative, "Thundering Peacemaker: The B-36 Story In Words And Pictures" includes the following features: 1) Approximately 62 black and white photographs; 2) 2 black and white illustrations; 3) 1 emergency landing fields United States map and 4) 1 three-view black and white USAF B-36 Intercontinental Strategic Bomber illustration.  This book is 30 pages and is in good condition.  The author is Frederick A. Johnsen.  Edition published in 1978.
