The Willys Jeep, which was based on the Bantam BRC proto-type was a 1/2 to 1 1/2 ton 4X4 military light utility vehicle utilized extensively by Allied forces during World War II up through the late 1970s.  The Willys Jeep is generally accepted as the first purpose built off-road vehicle to be mass-produced.  During World War II, Willys Jeeps were used for light cargo hauling when coupled with a single axle trailer, armed reconnaissance, field ambulances and for personal transport duties.  Willy's Jeeps sold as surplus after the war, were used for cable laying, fire fighting pumping duties and saw milling.  Former United States President and World War II five star general Dwight D.
