The Vought XF7U-1, which first flew in September of 1948, was a unique looking single seat, jet aircraft whose original design included an after-burner and 38 degree swept-backed wings.  The XF7U-1's novel design proved in practice to lack stability and maneuverability which resulted in the manufacture of only 14 production model F7U-1s.  A follow-up F7U-3 design was in essence, virtually an all-new aircraft that included a J46-WE-8 jet engine which gave the aircraft significantly improved performance.  The F7U-3 was a full-fledged photo-reconnaissance aircraft equipped with three different camera stations and viewfinders on the nose.  This variant also included a "flash ejector" on the back instead of weapons.  The F7U-3, however, continued to face inherent stability and manueverability problems which ultimately doomed the production program.  In the end, only 12 aircraft of this final variant were produced and none were ever assigned to active duty.  This highly detailed Vought F7U-3P model includes the following: 1) Authentic markings for an aircraft operated by the United States Navy; 2) Clear canopy; 3) Detailed cockpit; 4) Detailed landing gear; 5) Recessed panel lines; 6) Two bombs mounted externally under the wings and 7) Illustrated assembly instructions.  The box is in like new condition.  Never opened and factory sealed.
