The book, Warships of the First World War, examines the balance of naval power of all the nations involved in the war highlighting the technical advances the war inspired along with the more exiting and significant naval exploits.  At the beginning of World War I two of the greatest navies ever assembled faced each other across the North Sea.  While the admirals on both sides of this conflict looked forward to a major confrontation where scores could be settled, the reality was that the British Navy's surface fleet was far superior to the German Naval forces which meant other than the Battle of Jutland most of the engagements during the war were minor clashes.  The German Navy wisely chose to use their superior submarine and torpedo technology to challenge the Allied forces on the high seas.  The major sections of this book include the following: 1) The Balance of Naval Power, August, 1914; 2) Warships at the Dardanelles; 3) The Cruise of the Emden; 4) Sinking of the Aboukir, Hogue and Cressy; 5) Submarines: New Menace at Sea; 6) Q-ships - Killers in Disguise; 7) Dazzle Painting; 8) Oddities of the Sea War and 9) The End of the High Seas Fleet.  In addition to an informative narrative, the book "Warships of the First World War" includes the following features: 1) About 45 black and white photographs; 2) 5 black and white illustrations; 3) 16 color illustrations; 4) 25 color ship illustrations with specifications; 5) 3 color ship "cut-away" illustrations and 6) 3 illustrated maps.  This book is 64 pages and is in excellent condition.  This book is edited Bernard Fitzsimons.  Edition published in 1974.
