The book, When The Railroad Was King tells the story of Michigan Railroads during their "golden era", which lasted from 1837 through the turn of the century.  During this timeframe, railroads in Michigan dominated the state's inland transportation grid.  By 1910, however, the total track mileage began to decline as a result of the more prominent role of the automobile and other forms of mass transit including interurban streetcars.  Just in the period of time between the first publication of "When The Railroad Was King" in 1965 and this edition, Michigan mainline railroad track had been reduced by 25% and the future of railroading in Michigan was bleak.  As the once-vast railroad network in Michigan has been transformed into abandoned right-of-ways and recreational trails, however, people have become increasingly curious about the origins of these former railroad lines.  This edition of "When The Railroad Was King" has been enlarged and improved to better convey what it was like in Michigan during the "golden age" of railroads.  In addition to an informative narrative, "When The Railroad Was King" includes 37 black and white illustrations and photographs along with 1 map.  This book is 72 pages and is in overall very good condition but does have a crease on the front cover.  The author is Frank N. Elliot.  Edition published in 1988.
