P-51 Bomber Escort #BBSFT0004
The book, P-51 Bomber Escort, tells the incredible story of arguably the best piston engine fighter to emerge from World War II. The famous P-51 Mustang was miraculously developed in 117 days after an agreement was concluded in April 1940 between the British Purchasing Commission and North American Aviation, Incorporated. While it was first exported to Britain, once America entered World War II, the United States Army Air Corps also flew the early Mustang models. The D variant which was the major version flown during the war included lowering the upper part of the rear fuselage in order to give the pilot a better field of view. This variant also included a bubble canopy and a dorsal fin in front of the tail. The P-51 D was powered by a 1,450 h.p. Packard-Merlin engine, had a top speed of about 437 m.p.h. and carried six .50 caliber machine guns. In the end, the P-51 Mustang was a favorite among all the airmen who flew it and while it became famous as a successful long range bomber escort, it showed its excellence in all the operations it undertook. The major sections of this book are as follows: 1) Prologue; 2) Birth of the Mustang; 3) Early operations; 4) The long reach; 5) Straffing and shuttles; 6) Europe-the final battles; 7) Mustangs from the south; 8) Against the rising sun; 9) Mustangs in the Pacific; 10) Epilogue and 11) Bibliography. In addition to an informative narrative, this book includes the following features: 1) Approximately 124 black and white vintage photographs; 2) 6 black and white illustrations; 3) 1 cut-away drawing and 4) 3 maps. This book is 160 pages and is in very good condition. The author is William Hess. Edition published in 1975.
